Why benjamin moore paint is better

DuPont told us his go-to is Regal Select Eggshell. Once our painters made their selections, I painted two rooms with Regal Select and, as someone who has spent a lot of time using low and mid-level paints, was stunned at how easy Regal Select was to work with and how nice the results came out.

There was also no splattering on the baseboard, chair rail or floor, a constant frustration with other paints. The end result was fantastic.

A number of resources are provided, including a phone app that will match the color of anything that you photograph, so if you see a flower with just the right yellow, you should be able to get a color match. According to Benjamin Moore, a gallon offers about square feet of one-coat coverage. For one room in my own project, I painted square feet with two coats and have just under half of a can left.

For two coats, that would be under two gallons. Regal Select is a percent acrylic paint with high solids, and a large number of polled professional painters stand behind it and let it represent them and their companies.

The sticker shock may be there, but as our experts were nearly unanimous in telling us, in the long run, a more expensive paint will be worth it.

This was the second-most-mentioned paint from our survey of painters, with two of them recommending it above all others. Also, a number of the painters who chose Regal Select mentioned Cashmere as another paint they like and trust. From what our painters told us, Cashmere shares many of the same characteristics as Regal Select. The volume solids statistics of Cashmere and Regal Select are very similar.

Like the Benjamin Moore website, the Sherwin-Williams one is loaded with color selection tools and some other helpful design tips. We also noticed that they have coupons as well. Sherwin-Williams paints are sold at Sherwin-Williams specialty retail outlets, where there is likely to be a knowledgeable expert behind the counter.

They also keep a record of your purchases, so if you need a color match at a later date, they should have the information. The most noticeable difference between Regal Select and Ben is how they cover existing colors.

This price likely has to do with the high amount of solids, ranging from 40 percent to almost 48 percent depending on sheen , more than any other paint we looked at.

If you want bright accent colors, that is where Aura is the best bang for your buck. In it, a painter takes a wall from canary yellow to deep purple in about 90 seconds. In that regard, it looks like an excellent paint, but we also heard from a few painters that it does take some getting used to, due to its thickness. Behr is available only at Home Depot, and not specialty paint stores or smaller retailers, where the majority of our experts recommended purchasing paint.

During our research, we noticed that Sherwin-Williams often has coupons at their site. While this is an important piece of the puzzle for determining paint quality, it is also a difficult one to locate.

The percent volume solids changes with the sheen of a paint as well. Typically the flat finishes have a higher percentage than the glossy finishes. We need to stress that percent volume solids should only be used as a general guideline because the quality of the solids also plays a role. Marquee is a percent acrylic paint with solids ranging from 41 percent to almost 46 percent, depending on the sheen. For volume solids, it was second only to Benjamin Moore Aura.

Sherwin-Williams Emerald is styrene-acrylic based and has volume solids ranging from 38 percent to 42 percent. In June of , the acquisition was completed.

Stephany I. Doug Mahoney is a senior staff writer at Wirecutter covering home improvement. He spent 10 years in high-end construction as a carpenter, foreman, and supervisor. Both products are consistently good and come with great customer service.

Knowing the person selling me the paint will come out to the job site and help solve any problem that might arise is priceless. Our clients ask for both and come to us with colors from both companies so we are able to use a wide variety of paints.

Whether you decide on Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams if you stick with the premium product for your next project you will be well served. Buy the brand that has the product that best fits your project and budget. Nobody wants to regret the money and time they spend. These two paint companies spend a lot of money on research and development. They have a product for any need and project.

Lower quality paints need more coats and more labor. Patty pipes up. For starters, Benjamin Moore makes their own proprietary brand of colorant for their paints called Gennex. Sherwin Williams uses universal glycol based colorant. Gennex tints blend into themselves but also fortify the paint making a stronger more durable surface with less need for touch up in the first place.

However, if you find yourself in need of touching up, the tint will blend right in with the original paint without changing the sheen and the spot will be invisible. There are plenty more differences between the brands and their quality. Thank you for your informative comment, Melanie! There are many differences between the two and this article only touches on some very broad differences. Your information is a bit outdated. I hope that helps clear up any confusion.

I have worked in the paint industry on both sides of the counter for over 23 years. Harmony actually has VOCs. If you look on the label it says it. It is what folks at S-W are trained to tell people until it comes back on them, and they tell people to read the label. As a 23 year professional painter, I thank you for this article. I have my own preferences per job. I must say, I respect a homeowner who gets involved. If you are selling your home vs. Renting it out vs. Anyone that thinks Ben Moore or Sherwin Williams is as good as it gets is dillusional.

It rarely touches up. For the retail DIYr both are extremely overpriced. Shop around, talk to your neighbors, talk to people that make their money painting.

Often times they will send you to the local manufacturer not the big name giants. Coming from a guy with 50 years at it. The colors are very important. And their eggshell holds up beautifully in high traffic areas and kitchens and baths, but is subtle enough to use to use in any room—you never know when good washability will come in handy. I must add that I have used their products in homes in the Midwest and various parts of CA, including coastal and forested areas that have damp.

The paints held up fine despite location and my husband enjoys painting with them—they are not drippy, cover well, and have low VOC. I think its what quialty of paint u buy from the company i used S W. I never used BM. I used the super paint not-so-super complained management gave me a hard time at first so I decided to go ahead and buy the Cashmere level as that is the recommended brand for next Hide and stop finish for the paint and color.

Sherwin Has a nice Decent paints.. However there is a certain brush and Roller needed too apply well or they leave brush marks ect…thats the bad thing…so on top of the price being Hi..

I love Dun Edwards I never have a problem with it.. Not great but decent. My experience with Behr is that it is not consistent. Sometimes I get a good quality and others no so much. SW also owns Valspar and though they have a decent price their better paints are pricey. I love the new C2 paint from PPG but it is hard to find.

They have colors no one else can make or match and their coverage is tops. It has true one coat coverage. As to the walls peeling. Typically if you are painting you must paint the same sheen or go one step shinier. If you paint over a shinier sheen such as flat over eggshell you will get the peeling. If you desire to paint a lower sheen you will have to primer first. They are not at the same pricepoints I believe. Bm is more expensive meaning more pigment, better paint, But hey two coats of any thing usually covers.

This is a great question and many homeowners here have left some interesting comments. In high school, I worked at Home Depot and a Benjamin Moore paint store, and having sold and used both paints, it is obvious to me that BM is the better product. I have found that using a BM paint, I can use two coats sometimes 1 to get the coat done, guaranteed. With Behr, it might take 3 or more, and the finish isn't as deep or durable as BM.

Even though you might pay a bit more for Benjamin Moore, you have to remember you will be doing fewer coats which means less paint and less time! My husband is painting a front door with behr paint To me it seems like Behr has changed dramatically over the years. In the past Behr had great coverage, today it seems like it takes a minimum of 3 coats to accomplish the task.

Sometimes I'm still not happy with itI. I have switched to Sherwin Williams and have never looked back. If your doing it yourself, just get quality paint and products to work with. Don't use dollar store brushes and expect a quality look. Benjamin Moore every time. Great time saver. Consumer Reports "top" or "best of year" is consistently in opposition to what the public is reporting. And that means what?

CR is hogwash most of the time. If you are an advertiser they rate you better, period. BEHR is mediocre at best. Benjamin Moore's top two product lines, Aura and Regal, have lifetime warranties and are considered true one coat paints. Their entry-level paint, Ben, has a year warranty and is a great one to two coat paint. My wife and I have used all the major brands on our houses over the years and have concluded that Benjamin Moore is the go-to interior and exterior paint.

Sherman Williams is a close second, and the rest of them are substandard contractor grades, especially Kelly Moore. Dear Millworkman, You are sadly misinformed regarding Consumers Reports and how they develop their ratings and rankings.. What part of "Consumers Reports Does Not Take Ads and has secret shoppers buy all products anonymously as routine consumers" do you not understand?? They have their own huge structure of independent laboratories and test facilities.

Get properly informed before you express uninformed opinions as facts. All these reviews are highly anecdotal. We do not have access to all the details of the paint job. There are so many variables which can affect the outcome;.

Again, dulling the finish and priming should be done. Obviously going over a color in the same color family is going to color better. Bright, clear colors don't cover well, Dull colors generally cover much better. Both low temps and high humidity retard drying of any paint. The later two dry chemically. Latex paints are generally can be re-coated soon as the water has evaporated. Alkyds dry internally and if re-coated too soon can take days to fully dry!

Any of the above questions could adversely affect the outcome, yet the first thing homeowners do is curse that damned paint when something falls short of expectations. Tried both. You get what you pay for. Behr does not have the best coverage and you cannot get away with 1 coat.

However, Benjamin Moore you possibly could. Plus the eggshell finish with Behr has noticeably more sheen. I am 60 years old and have been painting for a long time. Benjamin Moore is definitely better both in saturation, durability and the people at the BM stores are trained much better at least in Canada and our area But, Behrs is my second choice and I have used it many times as well.

Do not ask the people who sell Behrs any questions about prepping, what paints can go over what paints , etc, as in my experience they think they know the answer based on their short training sessions instore, but they have steered me wrong in that dept many times years ago, learned my lesson the hard way. Hope this helps some, good luck and have fun. I love painting! The flat finish hides imperfections, can be touched up 2 or 3 yrs down the road without seeing it, it is scrubbable and looks very rich, but I guess sheen is personal preference.

I constantly read comments from consumers on how one paint covers better than the other. I always wonder how many of these users compared apples to apples, i. Did they compare comparable paint qualities?

All the major manufacturers make multiple lines of paint, ranging from "contractor's" crap paint to really good paint. There are many variables which determine how a paint covers, some inherent to the paint, and some determined by what is being covered.

Frankly, I read these comments as merely anecdotal. David Jensen: That is what Houzz is: a forum for ordinary people to give their opinions and views and talk about their experiences. I don't think it's claimed to be scientific empirical data. You are correct; these comments are anecdotal, but not "merely anecdotal". I learned from my mistake.

When we bought our home, we picked the colors from bam and the painters provided the paint. Never, never again. It will, of course be more expensive, bit I will buy the paint. They used the big tubs of bm paint - the coverage was good but not s good as the gallon paints. Also- if having your interior painted. Stick around a lot, because, as we found out, they only painted one coat on. Now, ten years later, I have learned. As a homeowner I've used both BM and Bher premium.

BM is great but expensive. If you can afford it and plan on saying in your house a long time then go for it. You can get Bher to cover in 1 coat if going over similar shade. If changing color and the old paint is in good condition, you can skip the primer and do 2 coats of the color. I just did 2 coats of Behr premium grey over brick red no problem.

There's no reason anyone should need 3 coats unless you really don't know how to paint. Invest in quality brushes and roller covers - going cheap there with give you lousy results. As far as color matching, have them match by scanning a color chip from the competitor vs. I used what was in their system for BM classic gray and it was off. Didn't really matter much since I used it in the basement.
