Canna flowers are very large plants with vibrant blossoms on stalks that can easily grow feet tall. The floral displays are striking in bright colors including pink, yellow, orange and red. The canna plant is grown from rhizomes so it is not necessary to let the blossoms wilt and go to seed. You can have weeks of additional blooming time if you "deadhead" or remove the wilted and dying blossoms from the plant. The complete removal of wilted petals and the seed producing ovary will give the plant a chance to produce more canna flowers.
Look at your canna plants and observe the wilted and dying blossoms at the top of the various stalks. Locate where the new bud growth is on the stalk to determine what areas of the stalk should be saved. Sign In. Join as a Pro. Houzz TV. Houzz Research. Shop Featured Holiday Categories. Home Decor. I'm not that familiar with which plants work best in Alabama but I think trees give the biggest bang for the buck. Now that the project is bare dirt, it's better to do the most major additions now before you restore with sod.
Move in all the bigger landscape trees and stuff you can and while you have the company or labor lined up to install the sod. Just have them prep the beds and use mulch where you eventually want to do smaller planting that you can install yourself if you want.
If there are any other structures, future electrical for more lights or an eventual outdoor kitchen or irrigation, put in those services and sleeves underneath walkways.
Have you thought about in a high traffic area of putting some synthetic turf and tying it into a putting green? Your outdoor room should have many elements an indoor room has.
The ceiling is defined by the shade structure or tree canopy , the walls by the fence or plants. Framed and enhanced by nice plantings and colorful pots as your accessories and it will draw you outside to enjoy. You're camera will help you. I don't think these angles best show the area where you'll want to concentrate. I also like to plan to have a nice large area for a tent or bounce house for bigger family events, so a 30 x 30' space is a good size to start with and keep large trees with spreading branching even farther away they don't encroach.
Think about keeping it low maintenance, nice shaped beds that are easy to mow and trim with nice radiuses, easy to access with a piece of equipment if you need a repair. Luckily it looks like you have a nice sized yard to accommodate.
Good luck. The idea of your garden areas is great, but your balance is too "measured. Spreading rocks around makes them look like fake rocks. This allows the plant to put more energy into producing new blooms rather than going to seed. Cannas should be deadheaded on a continual basis to encourage re-blooming. To do this, cut off the spent flower stalk directly above the second flowering node, which should be just opening. Usually a single canna has several flowers blooming in different stages.
Continue to prune off the spent flowers, leaving the ones that have are just opening or have budded. Canna rhizomes should be cut also, but this is usually called separating. Even if you live in a frost free climate, lift the rhizomes out of the ground about once every three years and separate the clump. Look for black spots, called eyes, on the rhizomes.
These are sites of the future flowering stalks. Use a spade or your pruning shears to cut apart the clump, being sure to leave between three and five eyes on each clump. This ensures that each clump will bloom again in the spring. When you replant them, plant them about 4 inches deep and about 3 feet apart. When Do You Prune Cannas?
