For security when backing up to a Time Capsule, an administrator can create individual accounts on the Time Capsule. Each account has its own network volume and password. Note: A Time Capsule set up with individual accounts contains a shared volume. Be sure you select your own volume as your backup disk, using the account name and instructions given to you by the administrator. Apr 14, PM in response to snowmobile In response to snowmobile.
Then when you set up TM to that disk do you also click on the Encryption option or not since the disk is already encrypted? So I finally got around to erasing the disk and formatting it as encrypted from the start - and everything has been working fine and fast since. Just as I hit the "erase" button out of the corner of my eye I saw that a backup had been completed - this after a recent reboot. So maybe it wasn't necessary to do the extra step of encrypting the drive, maybe just a reboot got TM back to a stable state.
I could confirm this with a test, but it's working and that was my goal so no use re-visiting this issue. May 9, PM. Aug 28, AM in response to Scott F. Using macos I realized I wanted to use encryption and started over. The same backup with encryption took over four hours.
I don't mind the extra time as long as I can confirm this is expected with some detail from Apple about why encrypted backups take many times longer than uncrypted. Aug 28, AM. Dec 1, AM in response to Scott F. Hello I got a slightly different question. I am still after my first backup. The first one took ages. I understand it should take 12 to 27 hours according to comments. I did shut down from safe mode. Dec 1, AM. Dec 8, PM in response to Scott F.
I'm having the same exact problem. Actually my first backup completed in an hour or so but the 2nd back up will probably take 24 hours if I let this encryption go on. I've called apple tech support and been to the genius bar, all who have attempted to solve the problem, but every time I go to do the 2nd back up, I'm home alone and their solutions didn't work.
Have you found any solutions yet? People are complaining about this in a lot of forums and I'm surprised Apple has not come up with a good answer yet. Dec 8, PM. Communities Get Support. Sign in Sign in Sign in corporate. Browse Search. Are you not double-dipping? I plugged in my External Hard Drive for a routine backup. My issue was that it was my first time taking a backup on my new computer I had transferred my data over previously.
Worked for me as well. It saved me a ton of time, on the latest macOS Catalina Worked like a charm. I was wondering why the encrypting was taking so long about GB backup. I redid the whole thing as you listed, and the whole thing took a fraction of the time. Thanks so much!! Thank you!
Followed your instructions, reformat done in less than a minute, then new backup done in under 2 hours again, but fully encrypted this time! I just went to format the hard drive in Disk Utility, however, it says by doing this it will erase the content — is that correct that it will erase all content on the hard drive by formatting in this way?
Is there any way to workaround this? If I just deselect the encrypt backups option but keep the disk encrypted should be enough security right? Could that stop the issues? In FYI: the decrypt process takes as long as the encrypt which was ok for me.
Took me about 18 hours to decrypt. Other options if you have a spare Time Machine drive, erase the second drive and start again using the faster method shown above. I use two drives for Time Machine backups and the backup switches drives every 10 minutes to keep both drives up to date within 10 mins.
The drive is no longer showing up in the finder or Disk Utility. Is that normal when encryption is in progress?
Improve this question. This is certainly very long. Add a comment. Active Oldest Votes. I have encrypted a 1TB drive in less time before. Checking the encryption progress using diskutil You can check the status of the encryption by using the command: diskutil cs list In the nested tree you will see a Logical Volume Family which is currently being encrypted.
Improve this answer. Community Bot 1. This is an incredibly useful answer, thank you. I decided to abort the process shortly before reading this, so I can't test it myself. The drive has been having serious problems since then, even after reformatting, so I suspect something is going wrong with it. Being used to the above, I was quite surprised that erasing a disk and enabling encryption in Disk Utility, and then copying lots of data to that empty disk, shows "Complete" right after the copying is done.
So, both start with an erased and encrypted disk.
